Though it is commonly believed that a house is an asset, the significant decrease in property prices over the last few months in most countries has shown that they can be liability . Additionally a significant amount has to be spent on property taxes and maintenance. An asset generates money for the owner of the asset, and a house does not generate any income for the homeĀ owner, unless he or she rents out the property.
Before moving into a new residence, whether previously owned or newly constructed, it is advisable to get it checked by home inspector. By getting it inspected by a neutral qualified third party, you can get expert information about the actual condition of the house and maintenance requirements.
For a new house, the builder will provide a service warranty for most of the systems installed for an initial period of two years. It is always advisable to set aside a certain amount to meet unforeseen emergencies related to home maintenance.
The home maintenance requirements vary depending on the type of house you stay in and the climate in your area. Depending on usage and design there are certain systems which may require monthly maintenance while there are other systems which may have to be serviced only once in a few years or even once in a decade.
